Some travel experiences are worth planning a whole trip around. Whether it’s coming face to face with mountain gorillas in Uganda, witnessing the Northern Lights in Iceland or watching the sun rise over the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, these are the moments that stay with you long after you return home.

At Love To Explore, we believe unforgettable travel is about more than simply ticking places off a list. It’s about finding unique ways to experience iconic destinations, discovering extraordinary places through the knowledge of local experts, and adding those special touches that make a trip truly your own. From remarkable wildlife encounters and epic rail journeys to remote islands and world-famous landmarks, we’ve rounded up 10 bucket list experiences to inspire your next adventure, with a few ideas for taking each one beyond the ordinary.

Gorilla Trekking

Uganda

Gorilla trekking is at the top of the list for many wildlife lovers, for very good reasons.  There is something incredibly special about spending an hour with these animals.  Experiencing their human-like behaviour and family interactions is truly unforgettable. Just ask Alisha - it is still her most memorable travel experience, 10 years later.

To elevate the experience even further, stay at the luxurious Erebero Hills. The first Asilia Africa lodge in Uganda, it is designed to maximise the beautiful setting with expansive floor-to-ceiling windows in each spacious chalet, ensuring views of lush rolling green hills.

The Ghan

Australia

The Ghan is a legendary luxury train that travels through Australia's distinctive Red Centre, running between Adelaide and Darwin. This is no ordinary rail journey; it’s an unforgettable way to experience the sheer scale and diversity of Australia’s outback, passing ochre-red deserts, dramatic mountain ranges and remote settlements along the way.

With elegant cabins, excellent dining and ever-changing landscapes beyond your window, the journey is as much about the experience on board as the destinations themselves. Off-train excursions offer the chance to discover places such as Alice Springs and Katherine, adding a deeper insight into the region’s landscape.

Swim with Whale Sharks

Swimming alongside a whale shark is an extraordinary wildlife encounter, and the remote island of St Helena is one of the best places in the world to experience it. Despite their enormous size, these gentle giants are filter feeders, gliding through the water as they feed on tiny marine organisms. St Helena’s clear Atlantic waters offer the chance to see them in their natural environment, away from the crowds found at some better-known wildlife destinations.

Between January and March, whale sharks gather around the island, creating excellent opportunities to encounter these remarkable creatures beneath the surface. St Helena’s approach prioritises responsible wildlife encounters, with strict guidelines to protect the sharks and ensure they can move freely.

Trek Through the Great Rift Valley

For a different take on Tanzania, swap the safari vehicle for walking boots and explore a landscape that tells the story of humankind. The Great Rift Valley Trek takes you through the forested highlands of Empakai Crater, remote Maasai villages and rolling hills, before descending towards Lake Natron. Accompanied by local guides, you’ll discover spectacular scenery, star-filled skies and a side of Tanzania that many visitors miss.

To take the adventure further, combine the trek with a visit to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world’s most important archaeological sites. Discover the landscapes where some of our earliest ancestors lived, see ancient hominid footprints and learn about the region’s remarkable history.

Visit Picture Perfect Islands

French Polynesia

French Polynesia is one of those destinations that feels almost too good to be true. Think volcanic peaks rising above turquoise lagoons, tiny palm-fringed islands and coral reefs teeming with marine life. For us, some of the most memorable experiences lie beneath the surface, from swimming alongside manta rays and reef sharks to exploring vibrant coral gardens in some of the South Pacific’s clearest waters.

To make the most of your trip, we’d suggest combining Bora Bora’s barefoot luxury with the wilder side of French Polynesia. The remote Tuamotu atolls of Rangiroa and Fakarava are world-renowned for their diving, with exhilarating drift dives and the chance to encounter larger marine life. With so many islands to choose from, knowing where to go makes all the difference, which is exactly what we are here for.

See the Northern Lights

Iceland

Seeing the Northern Lights is one of those elusive travel experiences that you can spend years chasing. As ribbons of green, pink and sometimes violet light dance across Iceland’s night sky, the landscape takes on an almost otherworldly feel. The display is a natural phenomenon, so sightings can never be guaranteed, but with dark winter skies, dramatic scenery and relatively easy access to remote locations, Iceland is a fantastic place to try your luck.

To give yourself the best chance, we recommend travelling between September and April and staying for several nights, allowing flexibility to work around the weather and aurora forecasts. Ludo was lucky enough to see them multiple times over his week-long visit to Iceland earlier this month, so read his trip report to hear more.

Visit the Taj Mahal

India

The Taj Mahal is one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks. Built in the 17th century by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, this extraordinary monument is as much a love story as it is an architectural masterpiece. From its intricate marble inlay to the beautifully symmetrical gardens, every detail is remarkable, with the white marble taking on different hues as the light changes throughout the day.

Our local experts can arrange a knowledgeable guide to bring the history and craftsmanship to life, as well as help you discover a different perspective across the Yamuna River. It’s these little details that can turn a visit to an iconic landmark into a truly memorable travel experience.

Encounter the Big Five

The term ‘Big Five’ was originally coined by hunters to describe the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Thankfully, today it’s more commonly associated with the wildlife that many travellers hope to encounter on safari: elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo. Seeing all five in the wild is an unforgettable experience, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

If spotting the Big Five is high on your bucket list, the Greater Kruger region of South Africa is hard to beat. The Sabi Sands is particularly renowned for its leopard sightings, while the region’s thriving lion prides and carefully protected rhino populations offer excellent opportunities to encounter these remarkable animals.

Stay in an Over-Water Bungalow

Staying in an overwater bungalow in the Maldives is a bucket list experience for good reason. Imagine waking up to uninterrupted ocean views, stepping straight from your private deck into warm, turquoise water, and watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean from your own infinity pool. It feels a world away from everyday life, whether you’re celebrating a honeymoon, marking a special occasion or simply looking for somewhere extraordinary to switch off.

With hundreds of island resorts to choose from, finding the right one is key to making this experience truly special. From contemporary design and exceptional house reefs to outstanding food, wellness experiences and a more castaway feel, we know that no two resorts are quite the same. Thanks to our first-hand knowledge and extensive experience planning trips to the destination, we'll match you to the island that best suits your priorities, so your overwater stay is more than just a beautiful villa; it’s the right experience for you.

Visit Angkor Wat

Cambodia

Spanning 400 acres, Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and one of Cambodia’s most remarkable sights. Built in the 12th century, this ancient temple complex is steeped in history, with intricate stone carvings, towering structures and atmospheric corridors. It’s a place that’s difficult to fully appreciate until you experience it for yourself, particularly with a knowledgeable local guide who can bring its stories and symbolism to life.

To make your visit even more memorable, our local partners can help you discover Angkor Wat beyond the usual tourist trail. From choosing the best entrance to appreciate the sheer scale of the complex to finding the perfect viewpoint for sunrise, the little details make all the difference. You can even finish your visit with a traditional water blessing from Buddhist monks, adding to an already unforgettable day.

That said, for the best choice of boutique lodges and the most sought-after properties, we recommend beginning the planning process around nine months to a year ahead, allowing the widest possible access to availability and experiences. For certain safari lodges and iconic seasonal moments, such as Japan’s cherry blossom season, we would advise planning up to two years in advance.
