There’s nowhere quite like India. It’s a destination that envelops every sense — the scent of spices drifting from a street cart, the sound of a temple bell at dawn, the kaleidoscope of colour around every corner. My recent research trip through Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Deogarh, and Udaipur was a vivid reminder of why India remains one of the world’s most compelling places to explore.

Thanks to the incredible team at Periplus, our new local partners, the journey ran seamlessly. Their attention to detail, creativity, and ability to anticipate every need elevated the experience to another level. Ravi and his team truly understand the art of exceptional travel; the kind that goes beyond sightseeing and creates lasting memories.

Delhi

The Capital of Contrasts

Our adventure began in Delhi, a city that balances old-world charm with modern flair. From the moment we stepped into its bustling streets, we were swept up in the energy; the food, the markets, the stories.

We wandered through the leafy tranquillity of Lodhi Gardens, before diving headfirst into the chaos and charisma of Old Delhi. A mosque tour, street food tastings, and an evening of kite flying and sundowners on the rooftop of Haveli Dharampura perfectly captured the city’s vibrancy.

Hotel visits revealed Delhi’s range of luxury offerings. The Oberoi impressed with its beautifully designed rooms and flawless service, while The Imperial remains a grand dame, rich in history and character. The Lodhi offered contemporary sophistication, and The Leela Palace exuded classic Indian opulence that is ideal for clients who want a touch of splendour.

Agra

Beyond the Taj

It’s impossible to think of Agra without picturing the Taj Mahal, and seeing it at sunrise was every bit as magical as promised. Watching the marble change from soft blush to bright white as the sun rose was worth the early start.

Away from the crowds, a behind-the-scenes visit to a marble inlay workshop gave us a fascinating glimpse into the craftsmanship behind the Taj’s intricate design.

Accommodation highlights included the Oberoi Amarvilas, with its unbeatable Taj views, a true bucket-list hotel, and the Ekaa Villa, a stylish boutique option perfect for those wanting something smaller and more personal.

Jaipur

The Pink City in Full Colour

In Jaipur, the famous Pink City, the group’s creativity (and wardrobes) came alive. Between exploring bustling bazaars and the majestic City Palace, we found time for a rickshaw ride through the old town, which was a whirlwind of sound, scent, and colour. A behind-the-scenes tour of the City Palace offered rare insight into the lives of Jaipur’s royal family, past and present.

It was here that I purchased my now much-loved pink waistcoat, a souvenir that feels wonderfully appropriate.

Among the hotels, Raas Jaipur was my favourite and stood out for its design, energy, and location. We also visited The Leela, Rambagh Palace, Samode Haveli, Aagman Camp, and Dera Mandawa,  each with its own story to tell and with a unique appeal that will cater to different client types.

A memorable lunch stop at Raas Chhatrasagar provided a change of pace.  It felt like a serene countryside retreat that bird watchers and nature lovers would adore.

Jodphur

The Blue City Magic

If I had to pick a favourite, Jodhpur stole the show. There was something irresistible about its dusty blue alleyways and the looming presence of Mehrangarh Fort, one of India’s most impressive.

We were lucky enough to stay at Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the world’s most extraordinary hotels, which is part royal residence, part museum, part dream. The lobby alone takes your breath away. It’s worth noting that room choice is key here to ensure the full experience.

Raas Jodhpur, tucked at the base of the fort, was another standout, blending modern style with historic charm. The shopping here was exceptional too, and our group left laden with jackets, bags, quilts, and textiles. I personally contributed about 10kg to the local economy in shopping alone!

Deogarh

A Taste of Rural Rajasthan

After the bustle of the cities, Deogarh offered a welcome change of pace. This was India at its most authentic, thanks to warm hospitality and a genuine connection with local life.

We enjoyed sundowners by the lake, a farm-to-table dinner, and even a chance to spot leopards at dusk. The property we stayed at was simple but full of soul, run by passionate hosts who bring the countryside to life. It won’t be for everyone, but for those seeking something real and rooted, Deogarh delivers beautifully.

Udaipur

Romance on the Lake

Our journey ended in Udaipur, and it’s hard to imagine a more fitting finale. Set around serene Lake Pichola, with whitewashed palaces, glimmering water, and golden sunsets, the city feels like a dream.

We began at Raas Devigarh, one of my personal favourites of the entire trip. Though slightly off the beaten path, it offered incredible views, exceptional service, and stylish design. It is easily one of the best recommendations we can make for clients.

Of course, no visit to Udaipur is complete without the Taj Lake Palace, the floating icon that defines luxury in India. The Oberoi Udaivilas impressed with its grounds (though some areas could use refreshment), and The Leela Palace felt more geared toward weddings and large celebrations.

The Journey Home

For our final night, Roseate House in Delhi proved the perfect airport hotel — comfortable, well-designed, and surrounded by local dining options and a rooftop pool for that last-minute swim.

I flew Virgin Atlantic, and overall, the experience was impressive. Service was friendly and efficient, and the bidding upgrade system worked well. While the Upper-Class cabin could do with a refresh, the experience outshone British Airways, though still shy of the Middle Eastern carriers.

Reflections and Recommendations

India is a destination that rewards thoughtfully curated travel. It’s not just about seeing the sights; it’s about embracing the atmosphere, meeting its people, and finding the balance between comfort and discovery. Coupled with incredible photographic opportunities at every turn.

Our new partnership with Periplus was a highlight in itself. Ravi and his team were extraordinary.  They have curated creative excursions and tours, and provide on-the-ground flexibility, ensuring they can pivot to ensure every day goes smoothly despite any changes we need to make. They are truly invested in every guest’s experience. We’d have complete confidence sending clients to them for immersive, elevated travel in India.

From the rooftops of Old Delhi to the lakes of Udaipur, this research trip reaffirmed why India continues to capture travellers’ hearts. It’s chaotic and calm, regal and rustic, ancient and ever-new, and it leaves you already planning your return before you’ve even left.
