After a few days of relaxing with family, friends, and clients, I flew to Rodrigues, a little-known destination. I urge you to pull out a map and locate this tiny speck in the ocean. Situated 600 km northeast of Mauritius, Rodrigues remains largely undiscovered by the British market.
On the 90-minute flight, I was one of only three English speakers aboard. Be sure to get a window seat if you visit—the shallow, turquoise lagoon as you approach the island is breathtaking.
Unfortunately, my stay on Rodrigues was cut short due to Cyclone Bheki directly hitting the island. Although I spent only 24 hours there, it gave me a tantalising snapshot of what the island offers, and I’m eager to return.
Rodrigues reminds me of Bequia in The Grenadines—authentic, off-the-beaten-track, and untouched. Every local I spoke to described it as "Mauritius 50 years ago." Below, you’ll find an overview of the hotels I visited. I was particularly impressed with Tekoma and hope to stay longer next time, ideally without 7-meter waves and 50 mph winds. I’m keen to hike, snorkel, dive, and indulge in the local cuisine—all things I had to miss this time, but that has whetted my appetite for more.
In a world increasingly dominated by digital and virtual experiences, Rodrigues is an island you need to explore in person. I plan to return—will you join me in exploring?
