The following report covers the last 10 days of my latest research trip. I began by revisiting familiar territory for a week before exploring a little-known island, Rodrigues, located 600 km northeast of Mauritius.

Mauritius: Familiar Comfort

For a week, I had the privilege of staying at Constance Prince Maurice, a hotel I’ve been visiting since I was 10 years old. My father first visited in 1999, the year it opened, and I still own a very worn cap from that initial trip. Over the years, we’ve returned many times, earning me the nickname "Prince Ludo" among some colleagues. It’s a benchmark I use to measure all 5-star hotels and resorts.

This hotel, a favourite in our portfolio, has won numerous awards over its 26-year history. Quite simply, the service, food, and value for money are unmatched in my experience.

During my week-long stay, I enjoyed plenty of golf, swam countless laps, and indulged in a couple of Thirsty Foxes at the poolside bar. With some clients coincidentally staying at the hotel, we arranged several special events, including a cocktail bar on the beach under a full moon. We were fortunate to be there for the hotel’s 26th birthday celebrations, featuring a spectacular cocktail party, a banquet dinner with a Michelin-starred chef, and an impressive fireworks display.

Unsurprisingly, nearly everyone who visits this hotel becomes a loyal return guest.

Constance Prince Maurice

A firm favourite in our portfolio, offering unparalleled service.

I’ve been fortunate to stay at this resort many times over the past 26 years, and it consistently delivers excellent service, superb food, and an all-inclusive package that is wide-ranging. From the unique floating bar experience (Le Barachois) to freshly prepared sushi at the Asian restaurant, the food is exceptional.

A few minor touches could be improved, and I believe the rooms are scheduled for a refurbishment in 2026. However, this remains one of the best hotels in the world, in my opinion. The high repeat guest rate speaks for itself.

Constance Sakoa

A boutique bolthole on the west coast of Mauritius.

Constance’s newest addition to their portfolio, this boutique option on the West Coast is ideal for those seeking independence and a more intimate atmosphere rather than a resort-style stay. It pairs perfectly with Lakaz Chamarel in the south.

I was impressed with the beach restaurant, the small pool, and the spacious rooms. Some rooms offer better sea views than others, so we’ve ensured we’ll request these for future stays.

This simple, great-value hotel is likely to become a favourite among our clients.

Rodrigues: A Hidden Gem

After a few days of relaxing with family, friends, and clients, I flew to Rodrigues, a little-known destination. I urge you to pull out a map and locate this tiny speck in the ocean. Situated 600 km northeast of Mauritius, Rodrigues remains largely undiscovered by the British market.

On the 90-minute flight, I was one of only three English speakers aboard. Be sure to get a window seat if you visit—the shallow, turquoise lagoon as you approach the island is breathtaking.

Unfortunately, my stay on Rodrigues was cut short due to Cyclone Bheki directly hitting the island. Although I spent only 24 hours there, it gave me a tantalising snapshot of what the island offers, and I’m eager to return.

Rodrigues reminds me of Bequia in The Grenadines—authentic, off-the-beaten-track, and untouched. Every local I spoke to described it as "Mauritius 50 years ago." Below, you’ll find an overview of the hotels I visited. I was particularly impressed with Tekoma and hope to stay longer next time, ideally without 7-meter waves and 50 mph winds. I’m keen to hike, snorkel, dive, and indulge in the local cuisine—all things I had to miss this time, but that has whetted my appetite for more.

In a world increasingly dominated by digital and virtual experiences, Rodrigues is an island you need to explore in person. I plan to return—will you join me in exploring?

Rodrigues

C Rodrigues

A kitesurfer’s paradise with excellent value for money.

I spent my first night on Rodrigues at C, located on the island’s south coast. The hotel sits beside a safe lagoon, perfect for kitesurfing. Its reception and bar are perched at the top of the resort, with a pool on the second level and steps leading down to the beach.

I was impressed with the simple, clean rooms. If you’re a fan of kitesurfing and laid-back hotels, this is the perfect choice. According to the management, they rarely experience a lull in bookings due to the year-round influx of kitesurfers—this is one of the world’s top locations for the sport.

The hotel also offers a stunning coastal walk from C to Tekoma, guided along the seafront. For those seeking an active stay, this hotel is ideal.

Constance Tekoma

Off-the-beaten-track perfection on a tranquil, undiscovered island.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay at Tekoma due to the approaching cyclone, but I was given a tour by the experienced general manager. The resort is managed by a stellar team with experience at other Constance properties, such as Ephelia, Belle Mare Plage, and Prince Maurice. They aim to compete with Prince Maurice, setting a very high bar.

The property faces the ocean, with all points of the resort offering breathtaking views. Its small selection of lodges ensures privacy and a classy, unpretentious atmosphere. The beachfront lodges, in particular, provide stunning sea views and comfortable accommodations that align with the island’s philosophy of simplicity and authenticity.

The food blends local flavours with international options, with octopus being a particular favourite on the island. The restaurant and bar’s design and views are equally impressive.

The hotel features a small pool and offers safe ocean swimming directly in front of the resort. I’d happily return for a five-day stay to unwind, listen to the ocean, and explore the island.
