One of the things we love most about working in travel is the opportunity to meet the people who bring destinations and experiences to life. Over the past few months, the Love To Explore team has continued to connect with hoteliers, conservationists and local experts around the world, learning more about their work, their passions and the experiences they create.

As with our first instalment, these conversations have reminded us that great travel is about so much more than the destination itself. It is the people behind the scenes who make a place memorable, from those protecting wildlife and supporting local communities to those creating exceptional hospitality and sharing their knowledge with visitors.

In part two, we’re sharing some of the people who have inspired us, and will no doubt inspire you too!

Australian Wildlife Journeys

John recently came into the office to introduce us to Australian Wildlife Journeys, a collection of specialist wildlife experiences showcasing some of Australia’s most incredible landscapes and wildlife. We were also joined by Tony and Susie Sharley, founders of Murray River Trails, who shared their passion for the Murray River and the unique experiences they have created along its banks.

From the award-winning Murray River Walk to the multi-day Murray River Safari, their family-run business offers an immersive way to explore the Riverland’s wetlands, wildlife and landscapes. With a strong focus on conservation and protecting the river for future generations, it’s a wonderful addition to our Australia offering.

The Cabanas

Lamu, Kenya

Family-owned and operated by a lovely couple, Anna and Shawn, The Cabanas has a strong connection to Lamu. Anna grew up here before studying neuroscience in the UK, and later became a conservation filmmaker and wellness practitioner. After returning to Lamu to support her mother, Leslie, Anna and Shawn took over the running of Las Cabanas, a boutique beachfront hotel, building on Leslie’s legacy.

Bringing their passion for wellness and watersports alongside a welcoming barefoot-luxury atmosphere, Las Cabanas is the perfect relaxed island escape. With just seven cabanas, there is a mix of accommodation for couples and families. Each is unique in its design and setting and can be carefully selected to suit your preferences. Set on a quiet and secluded part of the island, guests can fully unwind and recharge.

Voaara Madagascar

Madagascar is an incredible destination, currently part of our “Beyond Our Core” collection. While many visitors travel here for its unique wildlife and fascinating touring experiences, Voaara Madagascar offers a chance to slow down and enjoy a luxurious beachfront escape that rivals some of the world’s best beach destinations. Philippe, the founder and CEO, recently came to showcase the hotel and share what has made Voaara something of a hidden gem for travellers looking for a more unique luxury stay.

Set along a remote and untouched coastline, Voaara has just seven bungalows and one villa, offering impressive privacy and seclusion. Talented chefs create memorable dining experiences, while activities range from surfing and snorkelling to yoga and stargazing. Voaara also has exciting plans to expand into the Caribbean, with a private island resort currently in development.

Thornybush

South Africa

Thornybush continues to have plenty going on, with some exciting developments across its portfolio. The newly renovated Saseka and Little Saseka reopened earlier this year, with a brand-new wellness centre featuring an infrared sauna, cold plunge, lap pool, and fully equipped gym. Nkelenga Tented Camp will open in April 2027 with four authentic Meru-style tents, including a family tent sleeping up to four. The camp will be available exclusively for sole use, making it perfect for families or groups looking for a private safari experience.

Excitingly, Thornybush Air will also launch in January 2027, offering private charter flights in a Cessna Caravan with executive seating for up to 10 guests. Alongside these developments, the team shared their latest Impact Report, which highlights the ongoing work they’re doing across community, conservation and sustainability, all of which are key parts of the Thornybush story.

Trade Shows

Earlier this summer, we attended two trade shows. These multi-day events give us the opportunity to meet new hoteliers and catch up with existing contacts across the industry. We always come away feeling energised, full of ideas for our clients and inspired by the incredible experiences on offer around the world.

Experience Africa

In late June, Alisha attended Experience Africa, a three-day annual event in London. Between 28 meetings, four educational talks and two networking events, there was plenty to be inspired by. From new destinations and conservation projects funded through tourism to luxurious new lodges, African travel remains as impressive as ever. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next safari, get in touch to find out more.

Tourism Australia Luxury Getaway

Ludo headed to the Luxury Getaway event, hosted by Tourism Australia in the Cotswolds, where he met with 25 tourism boards and operators from across the country. Each was carefully selected for the exceptional experiences and services they offer. Over the next few months, Australia will be joining our “Core” destinations, and we’re excited to be able to showcase even more of what the country has to offer.

FAQs

Why book a tailor-made holiday with a luxury travel specialist?

The best trips feel effortless, but behind every seamless journey is thoughtful planning and genuine expertise. A luxury travel specialist brings first-hand destination knowledge, trusted recommendations and personalised service to every itinerary, ensuring your holiday is shaped around you. From choosing the finest hotels and experiences to managing all the finer details, tailor-made travel allows you to make the most of your time away without the stress of organising it yourself.

What types of holidays do you specialise in?

Love To Explore specialises in thoughtfully crafted journeys designed entirely around each individual traveller. From slow, sun-drenched escapes on idyllic Indian Ocean islands to immersive, adventure-led safaris through the African wilderness, every trip is shaped by personal style and pace. While Africa and the Indian Ocean remain at the heart of what we do, our trusted network of local experts allows us to extend far beyond, opening the door to extraordinary destinations across the globe.

How far in advance should I book a holiday?

There is no single rule when it comes to booking your next escape, as every journey is completely bespoke. Whether you’re planning a special milestone trip years in advance or seeking a spontaneous last-minute escape, we can help shape it at any stage. That said, for the best choice of boutique lodges and the most sought-after properties, we recommend beginning the planning process around nine months to a year ahead, allowing the widest possible access to availability and experiences. For certain safari lodges and iconic seasonal moments, such as Japan’s cherry blossom season, we would advise planning up to two years in advance.
