Ludo's Trip to Jamaica

30 April 2026

A Research Trip with a Difference

Jamaica had long been on the radar, but this trip offered the perfect opportunity to experience it properly, not just the headline resorts, but the contrasts that make the island so compelling. Travelling as a group of ten for a special birthday (all of us having worked together previously at Audley Travel), it was as much about reconnecting as it was about research.

The journey itself set the tone. Flying outbound in Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class on one of their newer aircraft was a strong start; the Heathrow Clubhouse remains one of the best pre-flight experiences out there, and the onboard seat felt comparable to the likes of Emirates Business Class or Qatar Airways Qsuite. The food was excellent, and the overall experience was very polished, even if the service didn’t quite hit the highs of previous trips. The return in Premium, however, was faultless; efficient, warm, and a noticeable step above recent experiences with British Airways.

Discovery Bay: A Slow Start by the Sea

We began on the north coast in Discovery Bay, settling into a private villa that became home for the first five nights. Sleeping eight, it was simple and unpretentious, but exactly what we needed: a place to unwind, reset, and ease into island life.

With a private chef preparing fresh, home-cooked meals daily, much of our time is centred around long, relaxed lunches and dinners. The food was a highlight throughout; rich, flavourful Jamaican dishes like goat curry, oxtail, fresh fish, and callaloo, all served with the ever-present rice and peas.

Days were deliberately slow. Time was split between the pool, the sea, and gentle exploration. Snorkelling just offshore rewarded us with eagle ray sightings, while watersports added a bit of activity when needed. One evening, we visited the nearby luminous lagoon; a surreal experience, watching the water glow as you move through it.

What stood out most here was the authenticity. A dinner at a local restaurant felt completely untouched by tourism, and exploring the surrounding area gave a real sense of a Jamaica still recovering and rebuilding after the impact of recent hurricanes. While there are certainly more polished villas nearby, we were more than happy with our choice; the location was excellent, and the villa's understated nature added to its charm.

Into the Mountains: Lime Tree Farm

From the coast, we headed inland, and this is where the trip took a more adventurous turn. The journey to Lime Tree Farm in the Blue Mountains took around five hours, with the final stretch becoming increasingly rugged. The last 30–45 minutes, in particular, would challenge most vehicles; a Land Rover Defender felt entirely appropriate.

Perched high in the mountains, Lime Tree Farm is a small, boutique guesthouse offering a completely different perspective of Jamaica. Run by a British owner and ex sailor (Rodger) and his Jamaican wife (Tifony), it feels deeply personal; more like staying with friends than checking into a hotel.

The setting is spectacular. Surrounded by coffee plantations and accessed via a single-track road, it’s wonderfully remote. Activities here are simple but rewarding; hiking through dense, misty forest (our two-hour trek was memorable for the sheer volume of rain), birdwatching, and just soaking in the stillness.

One of the most enjoyable aspects was the connection to local life. A visit to Kermit’s Bar offered a glimpse into rural Jamaica that few travellers experience; unfiltered, welcoming, and full of character.

Round Hill, Montego Bay: Classic Caribbean Luxury

After another long drive, this time around six hours, I arrived at Round Hill Hotel and Villas, where the group split for the final two nights of the trip.

Round Hill represents a very different side of Jamaica. One of the island’s most established luxury resorts, it has long attracted a loyal following, including a number of high-profile guests. The property offers both rooms and private villas, making it particularly well-suited to families and multi-generational travel.

The experience here is defined by its service: warm, intuitive, and consistently excellent. The food was another standout, and every room benefits from a sea-facing view, which adds to the sense of calm and space.

There’s a distinctly American feel to the clientele, and pricing reflects its positioning at the top end of the market. However, for those seeking a refined, full-service Caribbean experience, it delivers. Returning here also carried a personal note; having visited as a child (image below for a blast from the 1990's), it was special to come back and see it through a different lens.

Final Thoughts

Jamaica exceeded expectations. What stood out most was the diversity; from laid-back coastal living to remote mountain retreats and polished luxury resorts, all within a relatively compact island.

The country has clearly worked hard to recover from the impact of a recent Category 5 hurricane, and while infrastructure and some areas are still rebuilding, the warmth of the people and the richness of the experience shine through.

A few practical takeaways: driving can be challenging, and I wouldn’t recommend self-driving given local conditions. Dining is generally informal, but the food is consistently excellent, especially when leaning into traditional Jamaican cuisine.

Above all, this was a trip defined by its pace and its company. Low-key, unpretentious, and filled with memorable moments, it was the perfect way to experience Jamaica, particularly with a group of close friends.
