The Datai is a luxurious resort nestled within a 10-million-year-old rainforest on Malaysia's Langkawi Island. The resort is spread across the hillside rainforest, overlooking the tranquil Datai Bay, which has been voted one of the world's top beaches.
The resort has 121 rooms, suites, and villas, offering either views of the lush rainforest or beachfront views. Accommodation is designed to blend into the surroundings, with minimal damage to the ancient forest. Rooms are divided into the Canopy Collection, which includes rooms within the central building, the Rainforest Collection and the Beach Collection.
Dining at The Datai is exceptional. There are five restaurants, including The Gulai House, which serves authentic Malaysian cuisine, and our favourite: The Pavilion. Perched on 30-metre stilts, amongst the lush treetops, The Pavilion serves Thai cuisine. Guests can also participate in cooking classes with the hotel’s chefs, using ingredients grown on-site.
The resort has an excellent spa and wellness centre which offers treatments inspired by ancient Malay traditions, set amongst lush mangroves, as well as a fitness centre and a tranquil yoga and Pilates pavilion. Guests can also access The Els Club Teluk Datai, an award-winning 18-hole golf course set amongst the lush rainforest, and alongside the coast, which is also home to a tennis and padel court.

There is no single rule when it comes to booking your next escape, as every journey is completely bespoke. Whether you’re planning a special milestone trip years in advance or seeking a spontaneous last-minute escape, we can help shape it at any stage. That said, for the best choice of boutique lodges and the most sought-after properties, we recommend beginning the planning process around nine months to a year ahead, allowing the widest possible access to availability and experiences. For certain safari lodges and iconic seasonal moments, such as Japan’s cherry blossom season, we would advise planning up to two years in advance.
