Surrounded by the south Icelandic countryside, Torfhús Retreat is a distinctive hideaway that brings traditional Icelandic architecture together with contemporary comfort. Located in the heart of the Golden Circle, the retreat is surrounded by sweeping volcanic plains, rugged mountains and views towards Langjökull glacier, offering a wonderfully peaceful base for exploring the country’s natural wonders.
The property comprises 25 individual residences, inspired by Iceland’s traditional turf-roofed houses. The 15 Torfbær suites are ideal for couples, with cosy interiors, handcrafted furnishings and private verandas, while the 10 larger Torfhús houses accommodate up to four guests and feature two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a spacious living area. Each residence has access to a geothermal basalt stone hot pool, with the Torfhús houses enjoying their own private pool.
At the heart of the retreat, the Viking Langhús houses the reception and restaurant, where guests can enjoy Icelandic cuisine made with local ingredients in a rustic, atmospheric setting. After a day exploring nearby geysers, waterfalls and dramatic landscapes, there is little better than sinking into the naturally heated waters of a hot pool beneath the open sky. In winter, the remote setting also offers excellent opportunities for stargazing and spotting the Northern Lights.

That said, for the best choice of boutique lodges and the most sought-after properties, we recommend beginning the planning process around nine months to a year ahead, allowing the widest possible access to availability and experiences. For certain safari lodges and iconic seasonal moments, such as Japan’s cherry blossom season, we would advise planning up to two years in advance.
