Alisha's Research Trip to Dubai

27 February 2025

While I have flown through Dubai more times than I can count, I have never actually been beyond the airport terminal. When I realised I would be flying through Dubai to reach the Seychelles for a family holiday - more on that next week - I jumped at the chance to spend a couple of days in Dubai.

Dubai: First Impressions

It was my first visit to Dubai, and beyond a lot of traffic, I wasn’t sure what to expect. With just 3 nights and 2.5 days in the city, I had to squeeze as much into my time. I visited three hotels in the city and two desert camps, but I also wanted to give myself time to see what the city has to offer beyond luxurious hotels.

I enjoyed a privately guided Art & Architecture walking tour, which started at the distinctive Museum of the Future building, before meandering through the city’s Financial District. Ann-Sophie, my guide, had lived in the city for over 16 years and she brought the city’s history and appreciation for nurturing art and architecture to life. I can’t recommend the tour highly enough, and it made me see the ever-growing city in a new light.

I was staying in the marina during my visit, and I did find the traffic in the area pretty intense so I made sure to try the public transport. Dubai has a metro and tram system, which I found very easy to use. Purchasing a “Nol” card – similar to London’s oyster card – was very simple, with machines at every station. Each journey was very reasonable, and for a premium experience, the metro also offers a “Gold” cabin, which requires a specific variety of “Nol” card and comes at a premium cost. Those who aren’t used to crowded trains or who want to enjoy panoramic windows will find the upgrade worthwhile.

Atlantis The Royal

A luxurious addition to Dubai’s iconic Palm.

Opened in 2023, Atlantis The Royal is an imposing building, instantly identifiable and set in a prime location on the palm. With plenty of press and hype over the past two years, I was intrigued to see it firsthand.

My first impression – it is certainly grand! The bustling lobby features a soaring sculpture and numerous water features, however as you leave the lobby behind it does become calmer. The rooms themselves were as luxurious as you might expect, with gold amenities and plush carpets, however, despite this, they managed to feel elegant rather than overly flashy. Most importantly – every room has incredible views. I hear the palmscape rooms are the most popular, but I’d personally opt for the seascape rooms, which offer endless views of the Arabian Sea.

Palace Downtown

One of the best locations in Downtown Dubai.

The Palace Downtown is a Love To Explore favourite, so I couldn't wait to check it out myself. With views of the famous Dubai fountains and the Burj Khalifa, it has one of the best locations in Downtown and is within a few short minutes walk of Dubai Mall. Despite how busy the area is, the hotel felt like a calm oasis.

The hotel has a distinct Arabic influence, with a more traditional style in the rooms and throughout the main areas of the hotel. I loved the pool area, which would be the perfect place to catch some sunshine between exploring the city. I enjoyed a delicious lunch at Thiptara, the hotel’s Thai restaurant. The waterfront restaurant has some of the best views of the fountains and our lunch was fantastic. I love Thai food, and this did not disappoint.

One & Only Royal Mirage

An excellent resort for winter sun.

The One & Only Royal Mirage has a long-standing, excellent reputation, since opening in the early 2000s. Set within 65 acres of manicured gardens and boasting over one kilometre of private beach, it has much more of a classic ‘beach resort’ feel compared to the other hotels I visited.

The hotel has three distinct areas, each with a different style and its own restaurants and pools, yet guests have access to facilities across the resort. I toured rooms and suites in all three areas and they each have their own appeal. I appreciated that The Residence is adults-only, while the styling within The Arabian Courtyard was my personal favourite. I absolutely loved the setting - if I was looking to spend a week simply relaxing in the sunshine, this would be a very strong contender.

Al Maha

A Love To Explore desert favourite

Al Maha is a desert resort, offering an entirely different experience to the bustling city. Less than an hour’s drive from Dubai itself, the resort is set within the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Once you leave the main highway, it is surprising how quickly you are fully immersed in the desert. We even spotted a number of oryx and Arabian gazelle within the reserve during our drive to the resort.

The resort itself was very tranquil, and I loved how calm the whole resort felt. Each villa has a large terrace and private pool, as well as a comfortable lounge area, so guests can relax in privacy. The villas have a clear “Bedouin” influence to them, with draped ceilings, dark wooden furniture and authentic Arabic antiques. Guests at the resort can also enjoy a selection of complimentary desert activities, from wildlife walks and camel treks to falconry and archery.

Amar Luxury Desert Lodge

An unforgettable desert experience

The last stop on my journey was to visit Amar Luxury Desert Lodge, a new concept from our local partners Magic Travels. It is set deep into the desert, surrounded by rolling sand dunes, and the camp seemingly popped out of nowhere. The camp has been created with sustainability in mind – it can be packed up to leave zero trace behind, it is run using solar power and structures are made from recycled materials.

Dinner at the camp is a delicious four-course affair, with Arabic influence. My highlights included an extensive Arabic mezze and a melting chocolate dessert. Those who don’t wish to stay at the camp can enjoy an evening sundowner experience at Amar, with dinner included. Having said that, I would highly recommend spending a night at the camp – it really is an unforgettable destination.
