The Best of the Best: Fishing Destinations

25 July 2025

We have to admit, when we think of the destinations in our portfolio, fishing isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. It’s usually the wildlife, landscapes, or unique cultures that stand out. However, one activity kept cropping up in relation to our favourite destinations: fishing. Whether it’s tranquil fly-fishing in a remote corner of Iceland or adrenaline-fuelled deep-sea trips in the Indian Ocean, these excursions offer yet another way to experience a new location.

For some travellers, it’s a much-loved pastime; for others, a chance to try something new in a spectacular setting. From remote rivers to turquoise oceans, we’ve rounded up six of the best lodges, camps, and hotels across three continents – all offering unforgettable fishing experiences.

Alphonse

Seychelles

Alphonse Island, part of a remote atoll in the Seychelles’ outer islands, is a renowned fishing destination. The surrounding waters are home to a thriving population of bonefish, among other species, which attract fly-fishing enthusiasts, while the deep-sea fishing is also second to none. With steep drop-offs at the edge of the Alphonse and St François atolls drawing tuna, sailfish and wahoo, there is ample opportunity for unforgettable excursions.

In addition to fishing, the waters offer excellent diving and snorkelling, dolphin cruises, and the chance to participate in turtle conservation. The idyllic island has a relaxed, barefoot-luxury feel, with friendly service, spacious accommodation, and a strong commitment to conservation.

Dulini Anabezi

Zambia

The Zambezi River is home to the legendary African tigerfish, and with a prime position along the banks of the Lower Zambezi, it’s no wonder that Dulini Anabezi offers guests the chance to enjoy fishing excursions alongside the usual game drives and walking safaris you would expect from a safari lodge. With expert advice from local guides who are well-practised in fishing this stretch of river, guests can experience spinner and lure fishing.

The Zambezi is central to the Dulini Anabezi experience, with beautiful riverfront views from every angle of the lodge. Guests can relax on one of two decks and watch for passing wildlife, or unwind in their private plunge pools, before heading out on thrilling game drives, where you can expect to see a variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, and even wild dogs.

LUX* Le Morne

Mauritius

Deep-sea fishing is very popular with visitors to Mauritius – and for good reason. The waters surrounding the island are home to a wide variety of species, including tuna, dorado, wahoo and sailfish, as well as the elusive blue marlin. Before founding Love To Explore, our founder, Ludo, sailed around the world skippering yachts – and he confidently confirms that Mauritius was home to the largest fish he ever saw.

While most hotels in Mauritius offer deep-sea fishing excursions, we have a slight preference for trips that depart from the west coast – and LUX* Le Morne is perfectly located for those looking to head out on such adventures.

Usangu Expedition Camp

Tanzania

The Usangu Wetlands are a remote, rarely visited part of the vast Ruaha National Park. Between June and August, after the annual wet season, the waters become deep enough for catch-and-release fishing excursions. During this time, guests at Usangu Expedition Camp can enjoy fishing amidst the tranquil wetland ecosystem between safari activities.

Usangu Expedition Camp is an isolated camp with an authentic safari feel. There are just six tents, each with an en-suite bathroom and wrap-around deck, and guests benefit from a private guide and vehicle throughout their stay. Alongside game drives and walking safaris, guests at Usangu Expedition Camp can take part in ongoing research and active conservation projects.

Eleven Deplar Farm

Iceland

When it comes to iconic locations for keen anglers, Iceland often features highly – and Eleven Deplar Farm is perfectly located to take advantage of the thriving salmon populations during the summer season. Just 10 minutes from the luxury lodge, you’ll find the Fljótaá River, home to high numbers of Arctic char and salmon, which can reach up to 30 lbs in size.

For those seeking a particularly unforgettable experience, Eleven Experiences can arrange a multi-day fishing excursion to the Hölkná River – one of Iceland’s hidden gems for salmon fishing. Accompanied by expert fishing guides, you’ll spend your days fly-fishing across 27 pools stretched over 10 km of river, and stay in remote (but still luxurious) accommodation at Eleven Deplar Farm’s two Hölkná Cabins.
