The Best Of The Best: Owner Operated Camps, Lodges & Boutique Hotels

3 July 2025

At Love to Explore, we know that some of the most memorable travel moments come from the people you meet and the stories you discover along the way. It’s part of the reason we love owner-operated hotels and camps; they offer far more than just an anonymous place to sleep.

There’s something special about stepping into a place where guests are treated like old friends, complete with a warm welcome, thoughtful details, and personal service from a team that feels like an extended family. It’s about waking up to locally sourced breakfasts, getting tips from someone who truly knows the area, and feeling like a guest, not just a customer, while supporting local communities and sustainable travel practices.

Today, we’re sharing a handful of our favourite owner-operated places to stay, hand-picked from across our destination portfolio. We’re fortunate to know and work with a number of unique properties that could be featured, so if you have a destination in mind and would like some recommendations, do get in touch.

L'Archipel

Seychelles

L’Archipel is a long term favourite at Love To Explore, partly due to its idyllic setting on a secluded section of the Côte d’Or beach on Praslin. The other reason we love the boutique hotel is the personal, attentive service.

The hotel has just 37 rooms, dotted throughout the lush tropical gardens and hillside.  L'Archipel is dedicated to sustainable travel, with an innovative green initiative which aims to eliminate food waste as well as utilise solar power, rainwater and 100% biodegradable products in efforts to minimise the environmental impact.

The D’Offay family, who own and manage the hotel, first arrived in the Seychelles in the 18th century and opened the property 38 years ago. Eddie D’Offay, the hotel’s managing director, and his team are keen to maintain a “home away from home” feel that keeps guests coming back. And it works, as the hotel has an impressive repeat guest rate.

Tanda Tula

South Africa

Tanda Tula is a luxurious, contemporary safari camp located in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, a region renowned for its exceptional wildlife sightings within the Greater Kruger area. The tented suites are incredibly spacious and feature a modern design, stylish furnishings, and private plunge pools.

Wildlife is central to the Tanda Tula experience. Expert guides lead safaris through the reserve, which is home to endangered species such as rhino and pangolin, as well as the iconic Big Five.

The camp is owned and operated by the Scott, Jackson, and Mathebula families. Dale Jackson, who manages the camp on-site, emphasises the importance of fostering a warm, family-like atmosphere. Many team members have been with Tanda Tula for years, some for decades, and want to ensure that guests leave feeling like part of the extended Tanda Tula family.

Tekanda Lodge

Sri Lanka

Tekanda Lodge’s owners spent two years searching for the perfect location in Sri Lanka, and they certainly found it. Perched on a scenic hilltop and surrounded by lush coconut and tea plantations, the boutique lodge is just a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride from both the nearest village and the coastline.

The tranquil property has just six rooms and operates as both an exclusive-use villa and a boutique lodge. Guests are encouraged to embrace a laid-back pace, whether by wandering through the ten-acre estate to explore the lush jungle, relaxing beside the idyllic pool, or heading to the beach to enjoy the area’s popular surf spots.

Tekanda Lodge is the first foray into hospitality for Charlie and Richard Pembroke, who were originally based in the UK. The couple bring an infectious energy and a deep affection for Sri Lanka and the surrounding community. They have also established the Tekanda Foundation, in partnership with a local charity, which supports vocational training and a thriving girls' cricket academy.

Chiawa Camp

Zambia

Chiawa Camp is a multi-award-winning safari camp set in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. Owned and operated by the Cummings family, who have over 30 years of experience running lodges in the region. The camp offers exceptional wildlife encounters, including thriving populations of lion and leopard.

Blending authentic safari charm with modern comforts, the camp’s luxury tents each feature a spacious private terrace overlooking the riverbed, perfect for spotting passing wildlife. Chiawa has also introduced a romantic Star Bed Tower, offering an unforgettable sleep-out experience under the African sky.

Now run by Grant and Lyndsey Cummings, Chiawa Safaris has grown into a collection of premier camps across Zambia. The Cummings family are deeply committed to conservation and sustainable tourism. Chiawa Camp employs a high percentage of local Zambians and was Africa’s first safari camp to be certified carbon neutral. Grant is also a founding member and Trustee of Conservation Lower Zambezi, a non-profit organisation working to protect the region’s wildlife and habitats.

Blue Margouillat

Reunion

Blue Margouillat is a boutique hotel in Saint-Leu, on the west coast of Réunion Island, with views across the Indian Ocean. The hotel is a great base for guests looking to explore Réunion’s wild landscapes, from volcanic peaks and waterfalls to black-sand beaches and coral reefs.

The hotel has twelve stylish rooms and two suites, including options with private plunge pools and terraces overlooking the sea. As you would expect from a Relais & Châteaux property, dining is a highlight. The on-site restaurant blends refined French-Creole cuisine with an exceptional wine cellar, home to over 1,000 labels and 11,000 bottles.

Owners Marc Chappot and Marie-Pierre Fresson have shaped Blue Margouillat with a deep love for Réunion’s culture and flavours. Marc is an excellent chef who has lived on the island for over 20 years, while Marie-Pierre focuses on service and hospitality, with an endless supply of local recommendations she is always happy to share. Their warm, attentive hosting and outstanding cuisine have earned the hotel a fantastic reputation.

Ikuka Safari Camp

Tanzania

Ikuka Safari Camp is a stylish lodge perched high on the escarpment in Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park, offering sweeping views over the vast savannah below. Ruaha is one of the country’s largest national parks and yet sees relatively few visitors, ensuring guests experience an exclusive safari in true ‘wilderness’.

The camp’s spacious, open-fronted suites are built from local stone and thatch, blending rustic elegance with comfort. Each suite has a private veranda allowing guests to enjoy the incredible views. Ruaha is known for its impressive predator sightings, particularly lion, leopard, and cheetah, as well as large herds of elephant and diverse birdlife.

Mark and Chloe Sheridan founded Ikuka in 2016, having previously worked at a number of Tanzania’s best camps and lodges. With Mark’s extensive experience as a professional guide and Chloe’s background in hospitality, the couple have created a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
